Three Key Steps to Secure PC Software

The key to protecting your mobile devices, computers and data from hackers is secure PC software. Hackers, also referred as cybercriminals, snoop around your computer for many reasons. They could steal or alter, or even delete information that you value. Hackers have malicious motives, unlike other thieves who utilize stolen items for legitimate reasons. They are more concerned with having access to sensitive data that is not authorized. This could happen before you even know that something is wrong.

The three most important steps to secure your computer software include passwords, firewalls and protection against viruses. If you follow these best practices your computer will be less likely to be compromised by malware, hackers, or ransomware (software which encrypts your data and demands payment to unlock it).

Change the name of the administrator account. Choose a password that is strong and contains upper and lowercase letters as well as numbers and computer symbol. Avoid using a standard password like 1234 as hackers could employ automated software to crack passwords that are simple to guess in just a few minutes.

Update your operating system and other programs. Most software updates contain security fixes to help protect against hacking. Install all patches and set up automatic updates if you have them, to decrease the amount of time you’re vulnerable to hackers.

If you own an laptop or any other portable device, make sure the drive is encrypted even when it’s not in use. This is particularly crucial for UF Students. You can enable encryption in Windows by opening Settings > Update and security > Device encryption. This will secure the entire internal drive, as well as all external drives, such as SD cards.
